Methodologist x13 (Contract)

Location: England Country: UK Rate: £21 - £22 per hour + INSIDE IR35

Methodologist
£21-22 per hour. Inside IR35.
Initial 4 months
Hybrid - For this role you will be attached to one of our core locations in Newport, Titchfield, Edinburgh or Darlington where presence at one of these sites will form part of the working arrangements agreed with you

Methodologists conduct research and analysis, usually as discrete projects, and support different business areas in ONS with the provision of advice and guidance. This includes working collaboratively with experts in academia, other government departments and national statistical institutes worldwide, and also working on a consultancy basis for external customers.

These are the main graduate-level statistical posts in Methods and Statistical Design Division. HEO Methodologists have responsibility for their own work, and most posts do not have line-management responsibilities (though a few will, at times).

Statistical HEO Methodologists will:

  • work on a range of well-defined, statistical research projects, applying relevant skills, knowledge and judgement to conduct analysis, investigate options, and develop and improve methods
  • work closely with their customers in communicating findings, including making presentations and writing reports
  • be part of, and contribute to teams in the Division that specialise in particular areas of methodological expertise or in the application of methods to particular output topics, and will also work as part of other multi-disciplinary teams on specified projects
  • be expected to share their knowledge and coach others, especially as their own experience grows.

HEOs can expect to receive close support, guidance and training in methods relevant to their role, and more generally for their own professional development. They will likely be line-managed by an SEO Methodologist.

We require all of our HEO statistical Methodologist staff to have:

  • a good degree in a relevant subject, or equivalent experience by exception - see 'Essentials' and 'Desirables' for details
  • an aptitude for research, analysing statistics and disseminating statistical results
  • an interest in statistical theory and its practical applications, and new developments in the field
  • an aptitude for statistical computing (programming), ideally with experience of SAS, R, Python, Stata or other similar software, and the ability to learn new programming languages
  • an eye for detail and inquisitive nature, with a curiosity to understand how things work and why, and a desire to learn
  • an innovative and proactive approach to developing new methods and applications with strong problem-solving skills*
  • an ability to deliver high-quality outputs to specified deadlines*
  • an ability to work both independently and as part of a team*
  • an ability to communicate effectively, presenting statistical results orally and in writing using a range of formats, and to different audiences*

The following degree subject areas:

  • Statistics (or any subject combined with this such as Mathematics and Statistics)
  • Computer Science
  • Data Science
  • Mathematics
  • Economics
  • Operational Research
  • Quantitative methods
  • Data Analytics
  • Or any work experience which mentions 'statistics or data science'
